• The effort to bring turf fields to Masco was initiated approximately 10 years ago
  • Initial concerns around the project had to do with early reports on the safety of turf and inadequate financial projections – these slowed school committee support
  • Rental revenue was previously considered the primary means to pay for field replacement – early assessments were that full replacement would be required at the ten year mark
  • School committee did not want to blindside taxpayers if rental revenue was not enough to cover replacement
  • Turf Up Masco raised initial funds through individual and Maconomet HS Boosters donations to fund early initial plans and feasibility studies, followed by a demand study requested by the School Committee in October, 2019.
  • Pandemic stopped demand study in April 2020, restarted in February 2022
  • In October 2022, Stantec delivered a comprehensive “Synthetic Turf Feasibility Study”, which conceptualized a three-phase project with multiple synthetic turf fields.
  • Masco School Committee chose to only pursue Phase 1 at this time
  • School Committee support increased with clearer, more realistic financial projections in 2022 (with respect to rental income, replacement/repair assessments and the improvement of turf technologies and options)
  • School Committee unanimously voted yes in December 2022 to move forward with Turf Up Masco
