Turf Up Masco’s position on Boxford’s Warrant on a 5-Year Moratorium on Turf

If you plan to vote at the town meeting, do your research.  Speak to members of the School Committee.  Review the Stantec presentation.  Reach out to the Turf Up Committee.  Talk to your School Committee Representative. There is room for conversation, and there is opportunity to work towards a solution that is both environmentally safe and will benefit the school, the students, the athletes and the community. However, if this Warrant Article is passed, all conversation and debate stops for five years.

Turf Up – Late January 2024 Update

The Turf Up Committee provided an update to the Masconomet Regional School Committee on January 31, 2024.

We would like to thank the School Committee for the organized and informative meeting with an update from Stantec, Q&A from the Committee and the Community, and providing our team the opportunity to update the community on our status.

Turf Up – Early January 2024 Update

Welcome to 2024.  We have made some great progress on the Turf Up initiative, but we have much work ahead of us. We need more people to join our team to organize, execute and communicate and we need to raise funds.

Stantec: Design with Community in Mind

Turf Up Masco has runs with the concept that we can have SAFE turf at Masconomet.  We can do the right thing for our athletes, our community and our environment.  We reference time and time again that our supplier for the Permitting, Engineering and Design will explore all the options.  But what does that mean?

The Masconomet Regional School District selected Stantec for the original feasibility study as well as to provide a quote for the overall project.  This begins with the Permitting, Engineering and Design.  The construction piece of it will be bid out once we have approved plans.

Why Not Grass: A Deeper Dive

In order to continue on with only natural grass fields at Masconomet High School and not install synthetic turf, Masconomet Regional School District would need to implement an expansion, replacement, rehabilitation and maintenance program that is significantly more comprehensive than what we currently budget for in both money, time, resources and land.

Masconomet fields require not just an upgrade, but also an expansion to provide safe field conditions that can handle the constant usage and traffic demands of the student population. In addition to the fields, auxiliary facilities also require renovation or construction to meet the standards of both Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association host guidelines.

Status Update: April 12 – VOTE YES at Town Meeting

March 15, 2023 – Turf Up Masco presented an update to the Masconomet School Committee.  During and after the presentation, we added detail and engaged in very productive dialog with respect to donors, sponsorships, student needs and are communications plan.

We Need YOU!

It’s time to move forward to our next steps, but we cannot do this without your help. We need a stakeholder from each High School Booster organization and each Tri-Town youth organization to assist us in our efforts. We need support and representation from across the board for not only our High School teams, but also for those who utilize the fields as renters today and High School athletes tomorrow.
